It is estimated out of that 25 crore smokers in India, some eight crore are suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and heart ailments. Lung Specialist S.Naveen was speaking to reporters on Tuesday. He says the World Health Organization (WHO) had predicted that the incidence of COPD would go up further in India unless a massive awareness drive on regular exercises, stress management and need giving up smoking was not taken up immediately.
Dr. Naveen said that industrial pollution, cooking with fire wood and neglect of the management of Asthma had also led to the increase of the incidence of COPD
Dr Naveen said that according to a WHO report, an estimated 1.3 crore people were suffering from COPD and breathing problems in India. He said that India ranks fourth position in the world in the incidence of COPD and said that World COPD day would be observed on November 16.
